Oldham have signed Lee Barnard on loan from Southampton

Lee Barnard: Joined Oldham for the battle against relegation

Barnard was previously on loan at League One side Bournemouth, where he scored four times in 15 games earlier this season.

The 28-year-old is Oldham's third capture of transfer deadline day, following Reading's teenage midfield player Jordan Obita and veteran striker Chris Iwelumo into the club.

The signings come as Paul Dickov bids to guide the 19th placed Latics away from the danger, sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

Southampton winger joins Bolton on one-month loan deal

Steve De Ridder: Only seven appearances for Southampton this season

The 25-year-old was one of the mainstays of Southampton's promotion campaign last season, but he has found first-team opportunites limited since the Saints entered the top flight.

The Belgian has been restricted to just seven appearances in all competitions this season, although he has featured in four games since the turn of the year.

De Ridder, who spent three years with Dutch side De Graafschap before moving to Southampton in the summer of 2011, becomes Dougie Freedman's fifth signing of the transfer window.

Wayne Rooney scored twice as Manchester United beat Southampton 2-1

Wayne Rooney: Notched first-half brace as United beat Southampton

Jay Rodriguez gave the Saints a shock third-minute lead when he latched onto a poor back pass from Michael Carrick to tuck home around the advancing David De Gea.

But Rooney levelled just five minutes later, slotting into the bottom corner following an excellent through ball from Shinji Kagawa.

Kagawa then hit a post on United's next attack and it took some excellent goalkeeping from Artur Boruc to keep the hosts at bay as returning Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both threatened danger.

United finally doubled their advantage on 27 minutes when Patrice Evra climbed highest at the far post to meet Van Persie's free-kick, the France defender leaving Rooney with the easiest of tap-ins from barely a yard.

But the hosts were then forced to survive a second-half Southampton bombardment, with the visitors spending almost the entire second period camped in the United half.

Mauricio Pochettino's team pushed forward in search of a leveller, with substitute Adam Lallana having a significant influence as Rickie Lambert twice went close.

Briefly, United relieved the pressure, with Van Persie's goalbound header brilliantly saved by Boruc before the Dutchman had an effort ruled out from a Rooney cross for offside.

Southampton were soon back on the offensive, though, with De Gea producing an excellent flying save to turn away Lambert's free-kick.

Nemanja Vidic flung himself in the way of another Lambert piledriver before Rooney, who finished playing on the left as defensive cover for an overrun Evra, ensured the Saints' final assault got nowhere and his side kept the valuable three points.

Mauricio Pochettino was left frustrated after Southampton's loss to Man United

Mauricio Pochettino: Saw his side go down 2-1 at Old Trafford

The visitors took a shock third minute lead via Jay Rodriguez after a poor back pass from Michael Carrick.

Wayne Rooney put United well in control with a quick-fire brace before the Saints dominated the second half but could not find the equaliser their play deserved.

The defeat leaves the Saints hovering three points above the drop zone and Pochettino told Sky Sports: "I'm very frustrated and angry because I always like to win.

"Having said that we knew that Manchester United are an amazing team with quality players.

"Judging how we played in the second half I think we deserved a bit more than leaving here with nothing."

Opposing boss Alex Ferguson said the Saints were the best team to come to Old Trafford this season but Pochettino would have preferred points on the board.

"His words don't really serve as a consolation to me," added Pochettino.

"But I want to say thank you for those words and it also reinforces the w ay that we want the team to go forward."

Pochettino aiming for victory

Mauricio Pochettino: Thinking big

His side travel to face current Premier League leaders Manchester United on Wednesday night, and the Argentinean is targeting all three points.

The former Espanyol coach took charge at Southampton following the sacking of his popular predecessor Nigel Adkins but won over a lot of fans with a 0-0 draw against Everton last Monday night.

Next up is a trip to Old Trafford to face United but Pochettino is not planning to take his squad there to merely make up the numbers and wants make the long trip back down to the south coast after causing a memorable upset.

"Every game is important, every single match we play is important to us," he said.

"No doubt they are going to be tough and complex games against Manchester City and Manchester United but all games are like that.

"All games are key and the glamour factor does not dictate how we play, the main thing is that we go out with a winning mentality and we want to win every single game, we always respect our rivals but our aim has to always be to get the three points."

Club captain Adam Lallana could be fit enough to make the bench for the game against United and Pochettino says he will not rest key players with one eye on a crucial relegation clash with Wigan on Saturday.

"Lallana may play, he has been training well and looking okay so he may get some minutes against Manchester United so we will see how that develops," he said.

"We're going to Manchester to win and that has to be our mentality and I'm going to chose the players that will do that for us and for the team.

"Every single game represents three points whether you are playing against Manchester United, Wigan, Man City or Newcastle."

The draw against Everton came after Pochettino had had just four training sessions with his Southampton players and they were an impressive attacking unit for most much of the game.

Since then the club have had a trip to Spain, w here they made use of Barcelona's training facilities, and Pochettino believes the Spanish trip, coupled with the gap of nine days between their fixtures, has done wonders for team bonding.

"We are definitely happy with the break (between the Everton and Man United games) and the more time that passes the more we will be able to get the team playing how we want to play," he said.

"Even against Everton with just four sessions under our belts we saw positive aspects and we just want to keeping adding more.

"We achieved everything we wanted out of the trip to Barcelona, the togetherness of the team was very important to us and the players got to know us (Pochettino and new coaching staff) and we got to know the players well.

"It is important that the players feel there is an entire solid team of people working with them at the football club and being together 24 hours of the day was important, not just three or four hours a day in a training session. "

Last week's draw at Everton leaves the Saints four points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with 15 games of the season remaining for Pochettino to secure top-flight status for at least another campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson praised ex-Southampton boss Nigel Adkins

Nigel Adkins: Praised by Sir Alex Ferguson

Adkins was sacked by Southampton earlier this month, despite an upturn in form which saw his team come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea in his final game.

Former Espanyol coach Pochettino was installed as Adkins' successor and the Argentine takes Southampton to Manchester United on Wednesday for his first away game.

"I don't know a lot about him to be honest but I will have a chat with my brother [Martin] as he's been scouting in Spain," said Ferguson.

Regarding Adkins, the United boss added: "I spoke to him the day before he was sacked. He phoned me about his situation there. I mean I can't understand these things. I think their form had picked up. Was it two defeats in 12 games? That's not bad for a team at the bottom of the league.

"Southampton's fans have got a way of demonstrating and there were a few banners up at the Everton game. It's nice in terms of recognising the contribution Adkins made. He brought them up into the division and it's not an easy job."

United won 3-2 at Southampton earlier in the season in a thrilling game and Ferguson is expecting another tough test at home on Wednesday night.

"We're not taking anything for granted," he continued. "We've got Southampton on Wednesday, then we go to Fulham and then it's Everton at home. These are big games, massive games.

"Teams will drop points [in the title race]. Not just us but Manchester City will drop points, absolutely, it's a certainty Chelsea and Arsenal will drop points.

"We'll probably drop two or three ourselves but the important thing is accepting the challenge that every game is just as difficult as the rest."

Pochettino hails United duo

Mauricio Pochettino: Praise for United's veterans

Pochettino was part of the Argentina side beaten 1-0 by England in Japan in 2002, where his foul on Michael Owen conceded the penalty from which David Beckham secured a famous victory.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, with 34-year-old Ferdinand no longer part of the international side under Roy Hodgson and Scholes, 38, already having come out of retirement once.

However, speaking ahead of tonight's Barclays Premier League clash at Old Trafford, Pochettino feels both men deserve the utmost respect for continuing to play at the highest level with United.

"I am not surprised by their professionalism and how they have maintained themselves over the years," said the 40-year-old, who will be looking to secure his first win since replacing Nigel Adkins.

"I know they are amazing athletes, they take care of their bodies and their fitness.

"As a manager, I am very happy to see them still playing, it makes me proud to see players can last that long, which is all down to their professionalism."

Former Espanyol coach Pochettino used the break in domestic action to take his players away on a short training camp in Spain, which he believes helped the players and new staff bond.

While Pochettino is determined to stamp his own mark on the team, the Argentinian remains conscious of what the squad had achieved before his arrival.

"We have our own work ethic and our own philosophy as to where we want to take the club," he said.

"We have goals and ambition, we want to work for the team to achieve those goals. However, that does not mean we want to be anything contrary to what was being done before, it is not about that.

"It is more about our philosophy, how we want to take the team forward and how we want to achieve those goals."

With defender Jose Fonte still missing through injury, new signing Vegard Forren could be set for his debut at Old Trafford after jo ining from Norwegian side Molde.

Pochettino hopes the 24-year-old, who has not played a competitive match since December, will settle quickly into the tempo of the Premier League.

"We are very pleased Forren has decided to come here. He is a player who is going to cover certain necessities of the squad," Pochettino said.

"The most important aspect now is he adapts well to the team, is up to speed and will be able to compete with us."

Southampton are currently four points clear of the relegation zone and travel to struggling Wigan on Saturday before hosting champions Manchester City on February 9.

Pochettino remains confident his current group of players have what it takes to avoid being dragged into a dogfight for survival.

"I am happy with the quality of the squad and am confident we can do well in the league," he said.

Pochettino to build on Adkins legacy

Mauricio Pochettino: Wants to build on Adkins' hard work

Despite guiding the Saints to back-to-back promotions and keeping them clear of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone following a battling 2-2 draw at Chelsea, Adkins was unceremoniously axed and replaced by Argentinian Pochettino as the south-coast club sought a change of direction.

Southampton's executive chairman Nicola Cortese has defended the controversial sacking of Adkins, describing the timing as "perfect".

Nevertheless, the club came in for criticism after Adkins' name and photo were not included in the matchday programme for last Monday night's goalless draw with Everton at St Mary's.

Former Espanyol coach Pochettino used the break in domestic action to take the group away to a short training camp in Spain which he believes has helped the players and new staff to bond.

While Pochettino is determined to stamp his own mark on the team, which heads to Manchester United on Wednesday night, the Argentinian remains conscious of w hat the squad had achieved before his arrival.

"We have our own work ethic and our own philosophy as to where we want to take the club," he said. "We have goals and ambition, we want to work for the team to achieve those goals."

"However, that does not mean we want to be anything contrary to what was being done before, it is not about that.

"It is more about our philosophy, how we want to take the team forward and how we want to achieve those goals."

With defender Jose Fonte still missing through injury, new signing Vegard Forren could make his debut at Old Trafford after joining from Norwegian side Molde.

Pochettino hopes the 24-year-old, who has not played a competitive match since December, will settle quickly into the hustle-and-bustle of the English Premier League.

"We are very pleased Forren has decided to come here. He is a player who is going to cover certain necessities of the squad," the Southampton manager said.

"Th e most important aspect now is he adapts well to the team, is up to speed and will be able to compete with us."

One target who eluded the Saints, however, was Philippe Coutinho as the Inter Milan midfielder headed to Liverpool instead.

Pochettino worked with the 20-year-old on loan at Espanyol last season.

"I am not frustrated about not being able to sign him. I knew there was a small chance he would come here, but overall I have not had much time to consider new signings," he said.

"I am very happy with the squad which is available to me.

"We all know who Coutinho is, and that he is a quality player. However, there are other factors when we want to sign a player."

The Saints head to Old Trafford four points clear of the relegation zone, and travel to struggling Wigan on Saturday before hosting Premier League champions Manchester City on February 9.

Pochettino remains confident his current group of players have what it takes t o stay clear of being dragged into a dogfight for survival.

"I am happy with the quality of the squad and am confident we can do well in the league," he said.

Manchester United v Southampton: Robin van Persie set for recall

Robin van Persie: Set to return to Manchester United's starting line-up

Skipper Nemanja Vidic and central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand are also set to be included for the Old Trafford encounter.

However, winger Ashley Young (knee) and defender Jonny Evans (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Southampton could welcome club captain Adam Lallana back into their side.

Saints' boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed Lallana trained with the squad during a trip to Barcelona and is in contention to be involved at Old Trafford after missing almost two months with knee ligament damage.

Jose Fonte and Guly Do Prado (both knee) are absent, but new signing Vegard Forren is in line to make his debut.

Reported Southampton target Moussa Konate eyes English move

Moussa Konate: Keen on moving to the Premier League

Konate spoke of his desire to join a Premier League club in the summer after impressing with Senegal at the London Olympics but eventually opted for a Russian switch, joining FC Krasnodar.

However, the 19-year-old has struggled to settle in Russia since arriving from Maccabi Tel Aviv in August and is already targeting a European move.

Southampton are believed to be monitoring the striker, while Ligue 1 trio Bordeaux, Sochaux and Rennes have all been linked.

Ahead of his move to Krasnodar, it was thought that Konate had also turned the heads of Norwich, West Brom, Swansea, Fulham and Stoke.

Reports have surfaced suggesting his agent is in England working on a move to bring him to the Premier League and Konate would relish the switch.

He told Le Sport: "I have not settled in Russia and would welcome an opportunity to play in England or France."

Forren thanks Solskjaer for move

Vegard Forren: Living a dream by playing in Premier League

And Forren says he may contact the ex-Manchester United striker for advice ahead of his expected debut at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Forren moved to Southampton from reigning Norwegian champions Molde after initially being linked with a move to Liverpool.

But now he has moved to the south coast Forren wants to push on with the Saints after being sold on the Barclays Premier League by Molde boss Solskjaer.

"It has always been a dream to play in the Premier League," he said. "After a chat with Nicola (Cortese, Southampton chairman) there was no doubt for me with the plans he has for this club in the future.

"To be a part of that was hard to say no to, it is a team that is on its way up and a team who wants to play football - I was sure this was the right club for me. The club really wanted me and this feels the right club to play football in.

"For me he (Solskjaer) has meant everything to me, he is a great coach and I have taken big s teps because of him.

"I spoke a lot to him about the move and he really wanted to give me this opportunity so I have to thank him for that."

Forren could make his debut for Southampton when they travel to league leaders United on Wednesday night and former Old Trafford favourite Solskjaer should anticipate a call from his former centre-back.

"I haven't spoken to him in the last week but maybe I will give him a call tomorrow night," he said.

"He thinks it is a good step for me and a club on the way up."

The deal to take Forren from Molde to Southampton came during a managerial change at St Mary's but the player revealed he never had discussions with former boss Nigel Adkins about playing for the club with new manager Mauricio Pochettino now in charge of the Saints.

"I never spoke to Nigel," he said.

"I knew that there was a change and that the new manager wanted me here. For me it was never a problem, I was happy to be here and have an opportunity to play for Southampton."

The Premier League is very popular in Norway but Forren is not worried about upsetting people back home if Southampton pull off an upset at Old Trafford.

"All of my friends and family in Norway are happy for me to be in the Premier League, everyone loves the Premier League in Norway," he said.

"Of course I have some friends who are United fans but if I do well and we get the three points I think they will be okay."

With Jose Fonte still missing through injury and Forren settled into the Saints squad following a training trip to Barcelona the 24-year-old looks set to make his debut against United.

Cortese: Adkins timing 'perfect'

Adkins was relieved of his managerial duties nine days ago after taking the club to back-to-back promotions and 15th place in the Premier League, with his dismissal arriving two days after a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

He was immediately replaced by Argentinean Mauricio Pochettino, with the general consensus being that Adkins had been harshly treated.

The Southampton fans certainly felt so and sang their former manager's name during the 0-0 draw with Everton last Monday, but Cortese stands by the move he made.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, he said: "Nigel and I, we always had a very good relationship, to the last second. It was very tough, not just for him but for me.

"To me, there's one time, which is right, especially if you are 100% convinced it is the right thing. Ultimately for the team it was the right thing, it was perfect timing

"It sounds harsh but it was for the benefit of the progress we want to achieve over the next couple of months and years. It's not only for today but for tomorrow."

Cortese has attracted criticism in the wake of the sacking, with Saints icon Matt Le Tissier accusing him of having an ego problem.

According to Cortese, though, everything he does is for the benefit of Southampton.

He added: "Maybe I need to sacrifice my popularity to get the right decision. If that's the case, I'm happy.

"I am a perfectionist. Some people say that's not good, but it helps the football club to keep attention to detail and not stand still."

On Le Tissier, a one-club man afforded hero status by the Saints fans, he said: "I don't even know him, he's never met me. Anyone in the past who is associated with the club is stirring negativity towards me should probably ask if it's beneficial for the club. I would not allow myself to judge someone I have never met."

On the future of the club, but as a whole and with Le Tissier, Cortese asked everyone to get behin d his vision.

He said: "I'd like in the future, for the supporters to buy more into what we do as a club. Not players, managers or chairmen, the club.

"I am not excluding anyone. Anyone who has Southampton at heart has a place."

Lallana relishing Pochettino era

Adam Lallana: Looking forward to playing under Mauricio Pochettino

Lallana is closing in on a return to action following a six-week knee injury layoff.

Much has changed since the Saints skipper suffered the injury against Reading last month.

The club have moved out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone and they also have a new manager in Pochettino, who was installed following the shock dismissal of Nigel Adkins last week.

Lallana, speaking in Barcelona where Southampton are enjoying a warm-weather training camp, watched his team-mates batter Everton before emerging with a point on Monday in Pochettino's first game in charge and he is sure the future is bright for the club under the former Espanyol boss.

"You saw what style of football he wants us to play on Monday night - the lads came flying out of the traps and were pressing hard," the 24-year-old told Southampton's website.

"It's going to be different, but it's going to be good.

"The lads have done absolutely brilliantly over th e Christmas period, and the game on Monday was outstanding - the first half was probably the best I've seen all season from the stands.

"I'm so eager to get back playing, especially under the new boss. There's a team of four who have come in, and the gaffer is starting to get his messages across.

"We've come here for four days so he'll start to tactically put his imprint on how he wants us to play."

Having adapted easily to the rigours of top-flight football in the first half of the season, Lallana was disappointed to be sidelined for so long.

He is now desperate go get back in the fold and make an impression on his new manager, who reportedly wants to strengthen his midfield ranks by signing Inter Milan's Coutinho.

"With this being my first session back, it was nice to be with the lads again and trying to impress the new manager," Lallana said.

"Getting injured was obviously frustrating. I feared the worst when I it first happened, so I was lucky that I've only been out for weeks rather than months.

"I've just been professional about it - got stronger and worked harder so I hopefully come back a fitter and better player.

"I felt a little bit rusty but it's my first day back after being out for six or seven weeks.

"It'll take me a few training sessions but hopefully I haven't lost too much fitness because I've been doing quite a lot of running."

Southampton, who do not have a game this weekend as they are out of the FA Cup, are now four points clear of the relegation zone following a run of one defeat in eight matches.

While most Saints fans are just concentrating on their team's prospects of staying in the division, after their visit to the Nou Camp yesterday, Lallana is already dreaming of reaching bigger heights with the south-coast club.

"One day I want to be playing there," Lallana said after the visit to Barcelona's famous stadium.

"You've got to se t your sights high because you never know where the club could be in five years.

"We've come so far in a short space of time, and if we continue at the speed we've been going then you never know.

"It's been a nice first day. Visiting the Nou Camp was quite surreal, and the facilities at the training ground were great."

Schneiderlin eyes improvements

Morgan Schneiderlin: Hoping to improve under new boss

The Argentinean's appointment at St Mary's came under a cloud as fans' favourite Nigel Adkins was sacked by chairman Nicola Cortese despite guiding Southampton from League One to 15th in the Barclays Premier League.

Pochettino's first game in charge ended in a goalless draw against Everton last night in a match that Southampton dominated for large periods.

Schneiderlin, 23, admits former Espanyol boss Pochettino has not yet had time to put his stamp on the squad but is hopeful his South American flair will improve his own game.

"When a new manager comes in he has some new ideas but we have just spent two days with him," said Schneiderlin.

"He said that he did not want to change too much in two days. He said that he did not want to change the way we play straight away."

When asked if Pochettino could make him a better player Schneiderlin replied: "Of course. He has a lot of new ideas. He worked in Spain and we know that league s more technical and tactical.

"We can see already that he wants us to play a high tempo game with a lot of pressure and that is good because we are all very fit and we can do what he wants."

Despite a good performance against Everton, the Saints will be looking to convert more of their chances as they face tough fixtures against the Premier League's top two, Manchester United and reigning champions Manchester City, over the course of the next two weeks.

Schneiderlin knows would have suited Southampton but the former France Under-21 international is confident the team can pick up points against both of the Manchester clubs.

"We are confident we can do something against Manchester United and Manchester City, and three points would have been nice, but it is like that," he said.

"It is done now, but I am sure we can upset any team in this league."

Fans to make Adkins axe protest

Nigel Adkins: Harshly shown the door by Cortese

Nick Grant, the owner of SaintsWeb, Southampton's biggest internet forum, says new manager Mauricio Pochettino will have a hard task to win over some fans angry at Adkins' departure.

Fans plan to wave white handkerchiefs to indicate their displeasure during the St Mary's clash, in which Saints will bid to move further clear of the relegation zone by extending a run of just two defeats in their last 12 games.

Grant said: "As far as I am concerned he (Pochettino) will have my support, but there will be a lot of fans who will take the view that he has got to earn their support. It is going to be difficult given the run of games we have coming up.

"Nicola Cortese (Southampton's executive chairman) has obviously earned himself quite a reputation for having a bit of a trigger finger.

"But for it to come at this point after a good run of form is bad timing. For him (Adkins) to be treated in this way is pretty disgraceful really."

Saints he ro Matt Le Tissier went further, accusing chairman Cortese of having "a bit of an ego problem" and for acting in a cowardly manner by failing to explain his decision at the press conference to announce Pochettino's arrival.

Le Tissier said: "I don't know if Nigel was becoming too popular and the chairman didn't like it - he does appear to have a bit of an ego problem.

"The strangest thing about it all for me was he brings the new manager in about a minute after he sacked Nigel and then he hangs the new manager out to dry at a press conference on his own, which I thought was an incredibly cowardly thing to do.

"If he's going to make those decisions surely he owes it to the fans to sit there and explain his decision, but he wasn't brave enough to do that."

Pochettino asks for football focus

Pochettino: Respect for Adkins

The Argentinian's appointment came as fans' favourite Nigel Adkins was sacked and rumours were rife of a supporters' backlash towards both Pochettino and Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese.

But a scintillating start by the home side ensured the crowd stayed with the former Espanyol boss and his players as they came close to causing an upset by beating fifth-placed Everton, with Pochettino insisting he wanted focus to be on Premier League survival.

"I've been offered a job, an opportunity, and I've taken it," he said. "I'm happy how the fans have greeted me, and how the players have greeted me, and I just want to focus on my work. That's what I'm here to do.

"I have the maximum respect for the previous manager. It's never nice to take over from another manager who's been let go, but that's just how it's been."

Asked about fans' support for Adkins, he said: "That's freedom of speech. It's normal that they think that after a couple of season s of him being in charge.

"I credit the previous manager for the work he did here. But now I really want to focus on my tenure here and the future of the club here under me, and the goals we've set out to achieve."

New boss happy with efforts

Mauricio Pochettino: Felt luck deserted his side

Pochettino, who was given a warm welcome by the home fans despite rumours of protests against the sacking of Nigel Adkins, oversaw a 0-0 draw at home to Everton in his first game in charge.

The Saints flew out of the traps and skipper Rickie Lambert hit the post and had a header cleared off the line before half-time and former Espanyol coach Pochettino was left ruing his side's inability to convert their chances.

When asked if his side deserved to win he said: "Yes maybe on another night but that's football.

"It happens and you have to factor in luck, but I really want to point out the good spirit of the squad and the team with the solidarity of the players."

The 40-year-old stressed that his game plan was to attack Everton from the off as he went in search of a debut win.

He said: "I really wanted my players to focus on being offensive against Everton as we really wanted to be attacking minded, so we're working the long balls and a high defensive line.

"We worked a lot on pressuring them a lot and their attack with how their midfield players link up to attack so we were just concentrating on vertical, high speed football."

Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin reckons the whole squad are supportive of the new managerial regime and also felt the game was Southampton's to win.

"Everyone is behind the new coaching staff and the new gaffer, and tonight we showed that," he said.

"We put in a good shift and I think we could have won the game, so I'm sure we will win some more games if we keep playing like that.

"The gaffer told us that we had seven clear chances in the first half, so we could have scored.

"That's football - when you don't score, you are exposed to conceding but today we stuck in there."

Mauricio Pochettino makes debut point as Southampton and Everton draw blank

Rickie Lambert: Header cleared off the line by Leighton Baines

Talk of white-hankie protests over Nigel Adkins' sacking on Friday had dominated the build-up but an icy reception never materialised and the new man was instead warmed by a performance that could have brought the full reward.

Rickie Lambert hit the frame of the goal and was later denied by a scrambling Tim Howard but Everton lacked the quality to make the hosts pay in the second half and so a recent revival stretched to six games unbeaten.

There was no mention of Adkins in the match programme but a lusty tribute rung from the stands, before muted applause was afforded his successor as he walked into a flurry of flashbulbs.

Out on the turf, a high-tempo start soon grabbed the home attention and Phil Jagielka's interception from a pacy Jack Cork cross four minutes in might have gone the wrong side of the post had he not connected as firmly.

Jagielka deflected a Jason Puncheon shot wide of the same upright moments later as Southampto n pressed high and broke quickly, urged on by a boss who, despite limited English, had clearly conveyed that tonight was no time to sulk.

Everton had fourth-placed Tottenham in their sights but were unrecognisable in the first half; weak headers from Sylvain Distin and Nikica Jelavic - too often isolated - hardly worth the mention.

Up the other end, Lambert, back in the starting line-up, carried menace with boot and forehead; a 30-yard free-kick rebuffed by the corner of the frame of the goal, a downwards header kept out by Howard and then Leighton Baines.

Jos Hooiveld had an immediate chance on the half-volley, before Lambert rose high but headed wide to preserve stalemate, somehow, by the interval.

David Moyes must have vented at the break and his side took heed, Marouane Fellaini twice working Artur Boruc, before Leon Osman lashed at the Pole from range.

On came Victor Anichebe for the injured Seamus Coleman and swiftly u nsettled the home defence, sending over a ball over which Jelavic haplessly tripped, before stinging Boruc's palms with a left-footed strike.

Puncheon, underutilised as Everton belatedly found rhythm, nipped off the field to answer nature's call, to widespread amusement.

But though his side finished the stronger, the breakthrough remained elusive, another Lambert header landing off-target before late substitute Kevin Mirallas - back from injury - shot low as time ticked away.

Rickie Lambert wanted Southampton win in Mauricio Pochettino's first game

Lambert himself was to blame for missing two good chances in a forgettable 0-0 draw with Everton at St Mary's on Monday night.

And the striker was annoyed after a recent run of good form under former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins, who was sacked last Friday and succeeded by Pochettino.

"It was a good point but it's disappointing not to get all three," Lambert told Sky Sports.

"Especially in the first half, we played some really good football and I should have put at least one, maybe two away.

"I'm disappointed not to put one in the back of the net but we played well defensively and that's positive.

"Everything I've seemed to touch has gone in lately but today it wasn't to be. I was still hoping to get a chance in the second half but it didn't come."

Meanwhile, midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin admitted Southampton still did not know much about Pochettino.

But they will now go to Barcelona on a training camp where that can ch ange.

"I think he's been great," he said. "In the next couple of weeks we will get to know him better. Now we go away for a couple of days to get to know him and what he really wants from us."

Pochettino pleased by display

The Argentinian felt his first game in charge could easily have resulted in three points rather than just the one.

Speaking through an interpreter, Pochettino said: "Tonight we have done very well and created at least seven good chances to score.

"The only shame was that we didn't score the goals but we created a lot of chances facing a very good side in Everton who are fifth in the league.

"We deserve a lot of credit although we did suffer a bit more in the second half.

"But we were creating chances and just needed that bit more luck."

Pochettino also took time to thank the Southampton fans who backed their team throughout - although they still chanted the name of sacked boss Nigel Adkins.

"I want to thank the supporters for the very kind reception they have given me, it was amazing," he added.

Southampton add three to coaching staff as Mauricio Pochettino makes his mark

Mauricio Pochettino: Putting together his backroom staff

Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez, who previously worked with Pochettino at Espanyol, will join him at St Mary's.

The move sees Andy Crosby, Dean Wilkins and Jim Stannard leave the club, with the new trio supporting Fran Alonso, after he was named first team technical support coach last year.

Perez becomes Assistant Manager having previously worked as a technical coach under Pochettino in Spain.

D'Agostino has been confirmed as first team coach, while Jimenez becomes the goalkeeping coach.

"Southampton Football Club can confirm the appointment of Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez to the club's first team management staff," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Andy Crosby, Dean Wilkins and Jim Stannard have been relieved of their coaching duties, and we thank them for their service during their respective periods with the club."

Moyes a fan of lower league stars

David Moyes: Pleased to see Lambert doing well in Premier League

Lambert has spent most of his career in the lower leagues with the likes of Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers, but has had no trouble adjusting to the top level.

The 30-year-old's 10 goals make him the joint leading English goalscorer in the Premier League along with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, leading to talk of a possible England call-up.

Moyes said: "Like a lot of the Southampton players who have moved up through the leagues, he's done very well.

"Some of them have gone the distance with them, some of them have joined in as they've gone along but I think they've tended to keep the soul of the club.

"Rickie Lambert's been a great goalscorer through his career and he continues to do so."

Players working their way up to the top flight through the leagues have become increasingly rare, but Lambert is not the only one.

Norwich's Grant Holt and Adam Le Fondre of Reading have both made their mark at Premier Leag ue level, and Moyes hopes there will be others following in their footsteps.

He said: "I think it's something we have to try to embrace because if not we're going to be going abroad trying to buy all the players, or maybe clubs such as Everton and Southampton have got them all in their academy systems now.

"I'm now quite sure that's true and I do think it would be great if we were still able to bring in players from the lower leagues.

"We went and got Tim Cahill, Andy Johnson and Joleon Lescott and I think people got the message that we're trying to pick up players from lower down if we can."

Le Tiss: Cortese has ego problem

Nicola Cortese: Sacked Nigel Adkins this week

Le Tissier said he was stunned by news of Adkins' exit and replacement by Mauricio Pochettino - and slammed Cortese for his failure to account for his decision at a subsequent press conference.

Le Tissier told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek: "I don't know if Nigel was becoming too popular and the chairman didn't like it - he does appear to have a bit of an ego problem.

"It is a little bit bizarre, but some of the decisions that have been made have been a little bit bizarre since the current chairman took over. In a way it wasn't a surprise because I think he's been looking to get rid of him for a while now.

"The strangest thing about it all for me was he brings the new manager in about a minute after he sacked Nigel and then he hangs the new manager out to dry at a press conference on his own, which I thought was an incredibly cowardly thing to do.

"If he's going to make those decisions surely he owes it to the fans to sit there and expl ain his decision, but he wasn't brave enough to do that."

Saints axe Adkins, hire Pochettino

Nigel Adkins: Sacked by Southampton

The Saints are 15th in the Barclays Premier League after coming back from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw with European champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

But that was not enough to save Adkins from the axe, with 40-year-old Argentinian Pochettino taking charge of training on Saturday ahead of Monday's home game with Everton.

Pochettino, the former Argentina international, will take charge of Southampton for Monday's game against Everton.

Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese said: ""This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind.

"Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed.

"Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent man-manager. I have every confidence that he will inspire ou r talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level.

"He also shares my belief that the most successful clubs are built by nurturing young players through a development system that provides a clear path to the first team, thereby creating a culture that keeps them at the club for the long term.

"This is an approach he has employed with great success in the past and I look forward to him bringing that experience and expertise to Southampton."

Pochettino said: "This is the kind of opportunity that any coach would relish.

"Southampton is a club with great heritage, and an even more exciting future. There is a clear vision to take the club to a new era of sustained success in the Premier League, and beyond, which I'm delighted to be part of."

Adkins joined Southampton from Scunthorpe in 2010 and he guided the Saints into the Premier League with back-to-back promotions.

Southampton started slowly on their return to the to p flight but Adkins departs with the club three points outside the relegation zone after a run of just two defeats from their last 12 league games.

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino promises to win over the fans

Mauricio Pochettino: Hoping to win over Southampton supporters

The former Espanyol boss has replaced Nigel Adkins, prompting widespread disbelief and anger amongst fans and ex-players, who feel Adkins - the man who won back-to-back promotions - has been harshly treated.

Pochettino said: "I am very happy to be here in this amazing weather. It happened quickly, small details are not important, it's important I'm here at this project and club.

"They have done really well in the Premiership. In Spain we follow it closely. I am a great admirer of English football and am happy to be here.

"The challenge is to be part of this project, the kindness of the supporters is the biggest challenge I have," he said at a news conference.

"They are the biggest part of this club and I hope I can convince them with honest and hard work.

"I am very passionate about the Premier League. I have seen many games, the Premier League is an attractive league and I have spoken to people at length about it, people su ch as Jose Mourinho, who is a good friend of mine.

"He told me the best football in the world is being played here."

In making the decision, executive chairman Nicola Cortese said he was looking at the long-term future of the club.

The Saints drew 2-2 at European champions Chelsea on Wednesday night - a considerable feat seeing as they were in the League One relegation zone when Adkins took the job in September 2010.

Ambitions

"This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind," said Cortese in a statement.

"Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed.

"Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent man-manager. I have every confidence that he will inspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level.

Pochettino's first game in charge will be Monday night's clash with Everton.

The fans are likely to at least show support for Adkins but, according to former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier, they should not be surprised at what has happened.

"It doesn't surprise me," he told Sky Sports News. "It's a strange time of the season, they've lost two of the last 12 games and came from 2-0 down to draw at Chelsea.

"(But) it seems to be the way the club's being run under the chairman. Nothing's surprising a nd it's a bit of a laughing stock."

The ex-England international did concede the timing shocked him - Saints have been in good form and are clear of relegation trouble at present - but added he felt this could have been on the cards for some time.

"I'm shocked at the timing, it's very strange and it's an odd thing to come to terms with today," he said.

"I think he had a bit of pressure early on this season, people thought it might happen then; maybe they couldn't get the man they wanted then. It's all very strange."

Forren seals Southampton move

Vegard Forren: Joins Southampton

Forren, 24, has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Saints.

Capped five times by Norway, Forren was named player of the year in Tippeligaen in November.

Forren, who was at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday to watch Southampton's 2-2 draw with Chelsea, could make his debut against Everton.

Liverpool showed an interest in the defender, inviting him over to England for a trial, but Forren was excited by what the future could hold for Southampton.

"It's a dream come true for me. Southampton is a big club in the Premier League, which is where I have always wanted to come and play football," Forren said.

"When I was told of the interest from Southampton, straight away I wanted to come and talk to the chairman. We had a chat and I was very impressed - there was no doubt that this is where I wanted to be.

"The plan the chairman has for this club is fantastic. There is a good, young squad here and the way they play fits me well, s o I hope I can join the team and get some good results."

Forren officially joins Southampton on the day the club sacked Nigel Adkins and replaced him as manager with the former Argentina international Mauricio Pochettino.

Time is tight for Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino: New Southampton boss

The former Argentina international will take his first training session on Saturday after being recruited in controversial circumstances.

Nigel Adkins was sacked by the Saints on Friday, despite leading Southampton from League One to 15th in the Barclays Premier League with back-to-back promotions.

Southampton's decision promoted a furious reaction from supporters and former captain Matt Le Tissier said the club had become a "laughing stock".

Adkins retained his dignity and he left a message of encouragement to the squad which read: "Keep smiling. Have faith and belief that you are doing the right thing. Keep looking to improve."

Adkins' last game in charge was a 2-2 draw with European champions Chelsea which extended Southampton's unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches.

Pochettino's immediate task is to maintain that momentum, a task which could be harder given he hardly speaks any English, but he is excited by the chal lenge.

"I'm an aggressive manager, in the positive sense, and I like to play dynamic, pressure football with an attacking nature that the fans can be proud of watching their team," he said.

"The biggest challenge is to win all the games that are ahead of us.

"That is the mentality that we need to have going into the games as a team.

"In the background there is a project and we'll keep on growing together as a club with one of the best academies in the country."

Adkins was such a favourite at St Mary's that Pochettino is well aware he will have to win over the angry supporters.

"I hope I can convince them with hard work, honesty and that they enjoy the way the club plays and they feel honoured and proud how the team is playing," he said.

Pochettino could have defender Vegard Forren available on Monday after the Norwegian international joined the club from Molde.

"When I was told of the interest from Southampton, straight away I wanted to come and talk to the chairman," said Forren, the Norwegian player of the year.

"There is a good, young squad here and the way they play fits me well, so I hope I can join the team and get some good results."

Southampton fans urged to wave white handkerchiefs as a protest over sacking

Nicola Cortese: His decision to sack Nigel Adkins has angered Southampton fans

Adkins was removed from the manager's seat at St Mary's despite a successful 27 months in charge that has witnessed back-to-back promotions.

Under Adkins, the Saints won twice as many games as they lost and rose more than 40 positions in the league.

They currently stand 15th in the Premier League, following a run of just two defeats in their last 12 matches.

Adkins has now been replaced by Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino, with Southampton's executive chairman Nicola Cortese explaining the decision as being made "with the long-term ambitions of the football club in mind."

And Perry McMillan, of the Southampton Independent Supporters Association, is the latest person to criticise the sacking of Adkins.

McMillan wants the club's fans to wave handkerchiefs at St Mary's on Monday when Everton arrive on the south coast for a Premier League match

He told the Daily Echo: "As Spanish supporters wave white hankies as a form of protest it seems an appropriate way to protest at Nicola Cortese's ruthless treatment of Nigel Adkins.

"It's important we send out this message and as this match is live on TV and will be seen throughout Europe, it's a great opportunity to show how we feel.

"When you think about how hard he (Adkins) worked to get us into the Premier League, this leaves a bitter taste."

McMenemy shocked by Adkins sacking

Nigel Adkins: Sacked by Southampton

McMenemy, who managed the Saints from 1973-85, including an FA Cup win over Manchester United in 1976, also questioned whether Mauricio Pochettino had been lined up to take over ahead of the announcement of Adkins' dismissal on Friday.

In his column in the Southern Daily Echo, McMenemy wrote: "Speaking as a manager with more than a little experience - in fact well over 1,000 games at every level from fourth division to internationals - I never get too surprised. But I have to admit that the dismissal of Nigel Adkins and the way it was conducted knocked me back.

"Sir Alex (Ferguson), and you'll get nobody more respected in the world of football, called it 'crazy'.

"Other leading figures have used words like shameful and unforgivable."

Pochettini revealed at Friday's press conference that he had been researching Southampton's squad ahead of the announcement that Adkins was leaving.

"At his first press conference the new manager tried to evade the question about when he was first approached for the job but did admit he had been researching the team over the past weeks," wrote McMenemy.

"It will be helpful to him, and believe me he will need as much as he can get, but it really does look bad as those comments seem to suggest that Nigel Adkins was what I can only describe as a dead man walking."

Former Southampton player Matt Le Tissier was not surprised at Adkins' dismissal by executive chairman Nicola Cortese.

Le Tissier, who made over 400 appearances for the club, felt Adkins was not given a fair chance after taking the Saints from League One to the Premier League.

A pundit on Sky Sports, Le Tissier told the Soccer Saturday show: "What he has done for the football club in the last couple of seasons meant for me he deserved a fair crack of the whip but he hasn't got it.

"The team has picked up and there was a real feelgood factor and it just seemed a real crazy time to d o it.

"I am not surprised. The rumours have been around at the football club since the summer that Nicola Cortese didn't want Nigel Adkins in that position.

"Nigel has just been a sitting duck and that is just incredibly disrespectful to Nigel Adkins after the job that he has done."

Pochettino took his first training session with the Southampton players this morning ahead of the Barclays Premier League clash with Everton at St Mary's Park on Monday evening.

Pochettino could draft new signing Vegard Forren straight into his squad to face Everton after the Norwegian centre-back signed from Molde for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Saints in a deal announced on the day Pochettino took over from Adkins.

Capped five times by Norway, Forren said: "The plan the chairman has for this club is fantastic. There is a good, young squad here and the way they play fits me well, so I hope I can join t he team and get some good results."

Everton boss David Moyes, who has become used to seeing Premier League managers given the chop, admitted yesterday's sacking of Adkins caught him by surprise.

Moyes said: "I'm very surprised. I was talking to my staff during the week and complimenting how well Nigel Adkins had done.

"It was always going to be difficult after two promotions. Anybody who does that coming up, it's a long way up.

"He'd just got himself out of the bottom three and moved up and I don't think there would have been many people looking at Nigel Adkins to be sacked in that position."

Lambert hopes to win recall for Southampton; Everton won't risk Mirallas

Kevin Mirallas: Unlikely to be risked for Toffees

Lambert came off the bench to head his 10th Premier League goal of the season in Wednesday's 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

Pochettino, taking charge of his first game since replacing Nigel Adkins, will monitor the fitness of Adam Lallana who has returned to light training after a knee injury.

Kevin Mirallas is not expected to be risked for Everton after virtually two months out with a hamstring injury.

The Belgian is reported to be back in training but, after attempting to come back last month and breaking down again, manager David Moyes will not want to rush him.

Defender Johnny Heitinga could return after missing the last two games with a knock but full-back Tony Hibbert (calf) and midfielder Darron Gibson (thigh) remain on the sidelines.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier claims club in danger of becoming laughing stock

Le Tissier: 'I'm shocked at the timing, it's very strange and it&#39

Adkins - who guided the club to back-to-back promotions - has been replaced by former Argentina international Mauricio Pochettino, who left his coaching role at Espanyol in November.

Soccer Saturday pundit Le Tissier told Sky Sports News: "It doesn't surprise me.

"It's a strange time of the season, they've lost two of the last 12 games and came from 2-0 down to draw at Chelsea.

"But it seems to be the way the club's being run under the chairman. Nothing's surprising and it's a bit of a laughing stock.

"I think everyone is taken aback by it all. They have come to terms with life in the Premier League, had a tough start and have turned things round pretty well."

Pochettino will be in charge for the home match against Everton on Monday night, which will be shown live and exclusively on Sky Sports 1HD.

Adkins hails Shaw contribution

Luke Shaw: Praised by Saints boss Adkins

Shaw, who does not turn 18 until July, left Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta in his wake as he charged 50-metres run down the left wing before crossing for Jason Puncheon to volley the equaliser.

Puncheon took the immediate plaudits for a brilliant finish as Southampton proved how quickly they have adapted to the demands of the Barclays Premier League.

But once the dust had settled at Stamford Bridge, Adkins reflected on the giant strides Shaw has taken this campaign.

"You talk about maturity and he demonstrated it (against Chelsea). It was a great surging run. We keep encouraging him," Adkins said.

"We want players to pass the football and we want our full-backs to bomb on and in Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne, two Englishmen, we are very pleased.

"They have a long, long way to go in their careers. Luke Shaw is 17 years of age. He has come through our system. We are endeavouring to get as many as we can through."

Southampto n's draw at Stamford Bridge came less than a fortnight after they had been beaten 5-1 by Chelsea in the FA Cup - two games which Adkins views as a microcosm of Saints' season.

Having taken time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, the Southampton head to Everton on Monday three points clear of the relegation zone and looking up not down.

"In our first 10 games we only picked up four points but we have improved, the players have grown in confidence and we have found ways to pick up points," Adkins said.

"There is a continual growing belief, a maturity about the players. They are accustomed to playing in this division now and we are in a position where we are looking to pick points up.

"We were beaten 5-1 by Chelsea but we have demonstrated we can learn quickly."

For Chelsea, the draw represented a wasted opportunity both for the team and for interim manager Rafael Benitez just hours after Pep Guardiola revealed he was taking charge of Bayern Munich.

Chelsea have now drawn one and lost two of their last three home matches and the dissent towards Benitez was audible on the final whistle.

Cherries pick up Seaborne

Seaborne: Off to Dean Court

The 25-year-old, who was on the Saints' bench against Chelsea in the 2-2 draw on Wednesday night, began his career at Exeter before moving to St Mary's.

He spent time with Championship club Charlton this season, where he made seven appearances - the last of which came on Boxing Day.

"Dan is a player we have always liked and we have been aware of him since his days at Exeter," Eddie Howe told the Daily Echo.

"He is a left-sided defender, he is very experienced and is a leader. He is composed on the ball and good in the air and has all the attributes that we look for in a player.

"We certainly feel we need defensive cover and he can operate at left-back as well. It is a signing that boosts our numbers defensively and adds competition for the squad."

Seaborne trained with Bournemouth on Thursday and could come into the squad for their trip to Walsall on Saturday.

FSF wants 20 away ticket cap

Emirates Stadium: City fans asked to pay £62

Called the 'Score Campaign', the scheme comes days after the furore caused by upwards of 900 tickets being returned by Manchester City fans, who refused to pay 62 to watch their team at Arsenal.

Speaking on behalf of the FSF, deputy chair Martin O'Hara said: "Those who follow their team away are the distilled essence of the football fan - the hardcore. Without away fans the atmosphere at games dies and football loses a large part of what makes it so special.

"Travelling supporters spend the most time and money on their team and that deserves recognition and reward. In the short term clubs might make a few extra quid by squeezing away fans dry but long-term vision is required.

"Away attendances are in decline and something must be done by the clubs before that becomes terminal. Who wants to go to games without away fans, games without passion?

"We believe that an away ticket price cap of 20 would make football more affordable and halt the d ecline in away fan attendances. The Score Campaign aims to make this a reality."

The FSF say one of their recent surveys revealed that nine out of 10 fans feel ticket prices are currently too high.

Southampton fight back to hold Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge

Jason Puncheon celebrates scoring a dramatic equaliser for Southampton

Demba Ba scored his first Premier League goal for the club on home soil and his third in 11 days against their opponents before Eden Hazard put the Blues in a comfortable lead before the break with his second goal in as many matches.

But Saints fought back in the second half as Rickie Lambert struck two minutes and 47 seconds after coming on as a substitute before Jason Puncheon grabbed an unlikely point with a wonderful equaliser to push Saints three clear of the drop zone.

Chelsea took an early grip on the game but Ashley Cole only managed a soft header back across goal in the early stages.

They did break the deadlock after 25 minutes though and, almost inevitably, Frank Lampard played a key role and Ba, who had marked his Chelsea debut with two goals in the FA Cup tie, finished.

The Chelsea captain beat Luke Shaw as he jinked his way into the box before laying the ball back for Azpilicueta to curl the cross in. Oscar and Jos Hoo iveld both went for the header and the ball deflected up for the Senegalese striker, who executed an acrobatic volley to beat Artur Boruc.

And when Southampton made a hash of clearing their lines, Chelsea pounced for the second. Ramires rifled a shot off the post but Eden Hazard followed up to drill a left-footed shot from the edge of the box past Boruc.

The onus was on the visitors and manager Nigel Adkins threw on Lambert for Rodriguez after 55 minutes. Three minutes later he had scored.

Nathaniel Clyne escaped the attentions of Hazard down the right and swung in a deep cross for Lambert, who found space between three Chelsea defenders to head past Petr Cech for his 10th league goal of the season. No Englishman has scored more.

Chelsea suddenly looked a bit nervous at the back. The Blues had chances to wrap up the game but Ba rifled a spectacular volley over the top and Lampard curled a free-kick wide.

And then, with 15 minutes remaining, Southampton equalised. Youngster Luke Shaw charged 50 yards down the left and pulled the cross back for Puncheon, who teed the ball up with his first touch and powered a volley past Cech with his second.

Chelsea sent Torres on for Lampard to a chorus of boos. The Spaniard rifled one good chance wide and then lofted a cross straight behind for a goal-kick.

Since their 8-0 rout of Aston Villa on December 23rd, Chelsea have lost at home to QPR and Swansea and now drawn with the relegation-battling Saints.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins delighted with draw against Chelsea

But Adkins also felt his side had followed their instructions almost to the letter in securing an unlikely draw.

"We came here with a gameplan," he said. "Obviously Chelsea are a good side and if you give them space they're going to hurt you.

"So we came here to put a block in and to try to intercept and then go on and counter-attack.

"The two goals we conceded - we could have cleared them a little bit better in the penalty area and the one just before half time could have been a big sucker punch.

"But it was great character from the players - to come out in the second half and stick to that gameplan - and great impact (from the substitutes) coming off the bench and to go and claw two goals back."

It took substitute Rickie Lambert less than three minutes to score the goal that sparked the visitor's comeback but Adkins was unapologetic about leaving his top-scorer on the bench.

"We came with a gameplan," Adkins insisted. "To use the pace of Jay Rodriguez on the counter-attack and then look for the impact when Rickie Lambert comes on - and impact was what it was all about.

"He (Lambert) was fresh for those final 35 minutes of the game and he's come on and scored a vital goal."

Adkins remains behind Rodriguez

Rodriguez (l): Honest player, says Adkins

Rodriguez won the decisive penalty in Saturday's 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

When asked if he felt the former Burnley forward had dived, Adkins had a bullish response: "He's not a diver. We don't advocate diving here whatsoever.

"We could have had seven or eight penalties this season, we don't surround the referee, we allow the referees to make the decisions.

"When you look at the one at the weekend there was intent there, it was a poor challenge from the defender (Enda Stevens), correct there is no contact made but it's still a poor challenge from the defender - Jay is a young lad who is so enthusiastic."

Adkins, speaking ahead of Saints' clash at Chelsea on Wednesday night, also said that his team must continue to create situations where the officials are forced into making big decisions.

He said: "All we need to do is keep getting the ball in the penalty area in a way we give defenders decisions to make whether to challenge or not and give refs decisions whether to give penalties or not.

"Seven or eight times clearly we should have had penalties. That's the reality of football."

Chelsea v Southampton preview

Demba Ba and Fernando Torres: Fully fit and in contention for starting berths

John Terry's comeback from a knee problem will continue, although he is short of match fitness and is unlikely to start at Stamford Bridge.

Nigeria duo John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses are unavailable as they are at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Southampton could be without defender Luke Shaw for their trip to the capital.

The 17-year-old agreed a new deal at St Mary's recently but suffered a gash on the knee in Saturday's win over Aston Villa and is now a doubt for midweek duty.

Fellow defender Jose Fonte (knee) is still missing and, although he has returned to light training, club captain Adam Lallana (knee) remains absent.

Southampton among those keeping an eye on Bologna's Frederik Sorensen

Frederik Sorensen: Being linked with a move to the Premier League

The 20-year-old has become one of the most sought-after talents in Italian football, with his considerable promise having been noted by clubs across the continent.

A number of assured displays in Serie A have helped to convince those suitors that the time may be right to make a move.

With the January transfer window open, an opportunity to talk terms has presented itself and Southampton may be tempted to try and add Sorensen to their defensive ranks.

"It is correct that Southampton are among the clubs who have contacted Bologna regarding an interest in Frederik," Sorensen's representative, Michal Bolvig, told Sporten.dk.

"He has now produced regularly on a high level in a good league and it is natural that there is interest for a young player like him.

"The Premier League is an exciting option for Frederik. But he is not in a hurry to interrupt the progress he is going through at Bologna right now."

Comfortable

Denmark U21 international Sorensen, who joined Bologna from Juventus in January 2012, admits to enjoying his football at present, but has refused to be drawn into a debate regarding his future.

He said: "I am now playing at the heart of the defence, where I am best and feel most comfortable.

"I value the praise I have had from my coach and the club's sporting director. I am also happy for the responsibility I have got, although I am just 20 years old.

"It was not the same at Juventus."

Saints boss coy on Forren bid

Nigel Adkins: Coy over link to Molde defender Forren

The 24-year-old centre-back has long been linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League, with Liverpool, Everton and Fulham believed to have shown an interest in acquiring his services.

It is understood Molde have now accepted a bid from Southampton for the player, but Adkins said: "Like everything through the transfer window, there is always going to speculation and people talking about different deals and I think it is prudent that, until someone signs a bit of paper, you don't announce it.

"Already in this transfer window in January there has been one or two cases where a player is meant to be at one club and then the next minute they have signed for another club.

"Speculation is there and obviously this is the latest one and when things happen, if they happen, our football club will announce it."

Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer contradicted Adkins' claims earlier on Tuesday when he told Norweigian newspaper Romsdals Budstikke the c lub had accepted a bid for the player.

"There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer," he said.

Adkins did admit he had knowledge of Forren's ability.

"I know he is a Norweigian international who is left-footed predominantly, he has got a lot of games under his belt for a 24-year-old player and he has got a bright future in the game," he added in Tuesday's press conference to preview Wednesday's league encounter with Chelsea.

"If something materialises for any player at our football club we will be the first to announce it."

The Saints were on the receiving end of a 5-1 thrashing when Chelsea visited the south coast in the third round of the FA Cup earlier this month, but Adkins does not feel that result will have any bearing on Wednesday's game.

He said: "It is a league game and that was an FA Cup game and for 40 minutes we did all right and kept the ball and then conceded, from our p oint of view, two goals too easily."

Chelsea have already been active in the transfer market this month and Adkins is backing Rafael Benitez's side to be in the title picture come the end of the season, even though the Spaniard has had a rough ride from supporters since taking charge of the European champions.

"I think with the addition of Demba Ba now and whoever else they might bring in they look a very well-equipped side to go for the title," he said.

"It will be an interesting one but obviously he (Benitez) has started well in respect that they have won games, he is a good manager and has won the European Cup and the team play good.

"They have got exceptionally good football players who play good football and if you give them half an opportunity they will capitalise on that."

Adkins confirmed club captain Adam Lallana is back in light training but refused to give an expected comeback date. He also suggested Luke Shaw will be missing for the trip to Stamford Bridge after leaving the field on a stretcher with a gashed knee in Saturday's win over Aston Villa.

Saints bid for Forren accepted

Vegard Forren: Subject of a bid from Southampton

Liverpool had invited Forren to England for a trial, but Southampton appear to have moved ahead of Brendan Rodgers' side in the race for the 24-year-old.

Forren's agent is reported to be meeting representatives from the Barclays Premier League strugglers in London on Tuesday in the hope of agreeing personal terms.

Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had earlier told Romsdals Budstikke: "There have been many enquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer, it was very interesting for us and Vegard.

"We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is a hundred per cent confirmed.

"Molde is close to a deal, so we'll see if this is something that all the three parties will go on."

However, Southampton could face competition for Forren's signature with Queens Park Rangers also thought to be weighing up a move for the 24-year-old.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is in the market for defensive reinforcements with Ryan Nelsen set to leave for Toronto FC and he could make a move for Forren.

Gaston Ramirez happy at Southampton after link with AC Milan

Gaston Ramirez: Uruguay international is happy at Southampton

The attacker became Southampton's record signing last summer when he joined from Bologna and he has scored three goals in 14 Premier League appearances.

AC Milan and Fiorentina have both been linked with a move for the 22-year-old following reports that Ramirez has failed to settle at St Mary's.

Though Milan subsequently denied plans to make a January bid, reports in Italy claim the Rossoneri are interested in signing Ramirez for next season.

Ramirez has tried to put an end to speculation about his future, however, after confirming he is enjoying life in England with Nigel Adkins' side.

"I have had a very good time during these first five months at Southampton and I feel very happy being in England," said Ramirez in the South American media.

"I am enjoying being in this country. I like it very much that it is calm and the way that we live here."

Adkins hails Saints 'maturity'

Nigel Adkins: Feels Saints are improving

Saints gained a vital 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday, albeit through a fortuitous penalty when replays showed no contact was made on Jay Rodriguez before he went to ground.

Rickie Lambert's successful spot-kick, his ninth goal of the campaign, earned Southampton their second away success of the season.

It means Adkins' side have taken 17 points from their last 11 games after losing eight of their initial 10 matches back in the top flight following back-to-back promotions.

Adkins said: "That is 11 games now with only two defeats and those were only by a single goal.

"We've shown a growing maturity after a baptism of fire back in the Premier League.

"We've been used to winning at Southampton (in the last two seasons) and we are improving all the time.

"Everyone is getting used to this level. A lot of us were in League One a couple of years ago and in the Championship last season.

"We've come a long way and are adapting to the demands of the Premier League.

"The players deserve great credit because they want to improve all the time.

"We've shown we can score goals, have done it consistently all season again, and it was really pleasing to now get a clean sheet at Villa."

Regarding the penalty, Adkins said: "Jay's leg has moved out of the way which is just as well because there would have been contact (from Enda Stevens).

"We don't advocate diving at our club and we probably should have had seven or eight penalties this season that we haven't had.

"It was a case of what comes around, goes around, that you are due one, that sort of thing. It's a big decision."

Match-winner Lambert believes Southampton's ability to win matches against their fellow relegation rivals this season - their other away win was at QPR - could prove crucial.

Lambert, who netted twice in Saints' 4-1 home win over Villa, said: "Maybe two or three months ago we might have buckled in a match like that. It goes to show how far the lads have come.

"When we got promoted, we knew we didn't have much Premier League experience in the squad, only a couple who had played Premier League.

"We knew it was going to take us a while to get used to it. Now I feel we are getting used to it and improving every game.

"We still know there is a long way to go. We haven't done anything yet, but doing well against the teams around us is important.

"Everyone knows how important those games are and to get six points against a team like Villa, who are around you in the table, is massive and will go a long way to helping us at the end of the season."

Nigel Adkins happy to take lucky break as Southampton secure victory at Aston Villa

Mark Halsey awarded a spot-kick for an Enda Stevens challenge on Jay Rodriguez, but replays showed the striker was quick to go to ground under little or no contact from the Villa defender.

Rickie Lambert ignored the home protests to bury what turned out to be the winner, and Adkins was in no mood to apologise afterwards.

He told Sky Sports: "It's a big talking point. For me the big decision is the one on Jay Rodriguez, I think that's what he's given it for.

"There's no contact, for me, Jay has moved his leg out of the way - and it's just as well as there would have been contact.

"We don't advocate diving whatsoever - we've got to make sure everyone is well aware of that - but they say it evens itself out and we could have had seven or eight penalties this season. We've got one here and Rickie Lambert's put it in the back of the net."

Victory took Saints above Villa in the table on the back of a four-match unbeaten run in the league.

Adkins said: "It's a good three points away from home against a team close to us in the division. It's a clean sheet, too, which is important.

"We could have had the game out of sight in the first half. In the second half - credit to Villa - they came at us and we've had to show a lot of character to weather the storm."

Rickie Lambert is spot on for Southampton as his penalty helps sink Aston Villa

Paul Lambert holds his hands on his head as he watches his Villa side go close

Saints leapfrogged their opponents and into 15th place after recording their first win in five matches and only their second away win of the season thanks to skipper Rickie Lambert.

The decisive moment in the game was tinged with controversy as Enda Stevens appeared to make little contact challenging Jay Rodriguez in the penalty area but Mark Halsey was in little doubt as he pointed to the spot.

Lambert made no mistake from 12 yards, scoring his ninth Premier League goal of the campaign and his 97th goal in 179 games. The striker also maintained his 100 per cent career record from the spot - a perfect 29 out of 29.

Villa boss Lambert brought on Barry Bannan for Brett Holman at the start of the second period and his side showed more purpose.

Artur Boruc parried Andreas Weimann's left-footed effort and then Christian Benteke hooked the ball over the bar after the 'keeper had denied Stevens.

Brad Guzan was relieved when Jason P uncheon crashed a fierce low drive against the near post.

Villa then staged a late rally as Boruc kept out Benteke's towering header.

The Pole was powerless to stop Nathan Baker's header but it crashed against the crossbar from Bannan's corner.

Benteke then shot wide after Boruc had bravely saved at the feet of Gabriel Agbonlahor as the Saints survived to seal all three points and complete a league double over their opponents.

The harsh reality is Villa have now taken only one point from their last five league games and look set for a season-long battle to stay up. It completed a miserable week after the Capital One Cup semi-final, first leg setback at Bradford.

Saints have now collected 17 points from their last 11 games - a sharp contrast to losing eight of their initial 10 games back in the top flight.

Bantams borrow Saints' Dickson

Dickson: Loaned to Bantams

The 26-year-old left-back will join the Bantams' squad for Saturday's match at home to Oxford if he receives clearance.

He is eligible to play in the Capital One Cup.

Rodriguez salutes Saints start

Jay Rodriguez: Not started as many games as he would have liked

Southampton are back in the top flight after a seven-year absence and are starting to impress after a difficult start to the campaign, hovering just above the relegation zone.

On Saturday Nigel Adkins takes his side to fellow strugglers Aston Villa, whose recent problems were epitomised by Tuesday's shock 3-1 defeat to Bradford in the Capital One Cup semi-finals.

Southampton will be looking to compound matters and jump above the midlanders with victory - a result Rodriguez believes his side are more than capable of.

"We have a inner confidence and team spirit so we can go to places and get a good result," the striker said. "I am sure that we will.

"We are working hard every day in training, getting the right stuff on board getting ready for the games.

"I think we will go into the game with inner confidence.

"We've done very well this season and I think we have been unlucky on certain occasions not to get the three points.

"I feel we have got a self-belief, a team spirit, and feel we are going to go forward.

"We are picking up points on the road as well, which is better. We know we need to keep working hard, keep focused and hopefully keep moving up the table."

Rodriguez joined Southampton from Burnley in June for what was at the time a club record fee of 6million, but he has only made nine Premier League starts since the move.

"It has been a learning curve playing against better players and better teams," he said.

"It has been a little bit frustrating as I've not had as many games as I would have like to have played.

"But all I can do is work hard and just carry on trying to improve as a player."

The 23-year-old would have done his first-team chances no harm with a fine opening goal in last weekend's FA Cup clash with Chelsea, who came from behind to run out easy 5-1 winners.

Southampton face Chelsea again in a rearranged league fixture on Wednesday but Rodriguez is confident the heavy loss will not impact on their form in the league, where they have lost just two of their past 10 games.

"I think we are still confident in ourselves," he said.

"The week's training has been hard but good. I think we can take a lot of positives from the first half as well.

"Obviously Chelsea are a great side but I don't think will look too much on that. We'll look forward to the game on Saturday."

Rodriguez will be hoping for a start at Villa Park, while left-back Luke Shaw is all but guaranteed to be in the 11.

The 17-year-old ended months of speculation by yesterday committing his long-term future to the club and Press Association Sport understands he will pen a five-year deal when he turns 18 on July 12, 2013.

"That is brilliant - it is brilliant for Luke and brilliant for the club," Rodriguez said.

"He is a great player and a great lad. It is a nice thing to bring the youth thr ough the system and obviously it shows how good the youth-team players are.

"As you can see, they have brought some great players through the academy and it is nice to keep hold of Luke Shaw. I think he is a real asset.

"He is a great player and a good lad with a good attitude."

Aston Villa v Southampton preview

Darren Bent: Suffered knee injury in midweek

Changes are a distinct possibility after Villa's embarrassing defeat to Bradford on Tuesday.

Darren Bent is one enforced change to the squad after he suffered a knee injury at Valley Parade.

But there is better news regarding defender Ron Vlaar. The Dutchman trained on Thursday and is available for selection again.

Southampton will be without first-team regulars Jose Fonte and Adam Lallana when they travel to Villa Park.

The pair have knee injuries so will miss the trip to Villa Park, while Emmanuel Mayuka is unavailable after linking up with Zambia for the Africa Cup of Nations.

There is good news in regards to Gaston Ramirez and Nathaniel Clyne, who return from a dead leg and knee complaint respectively.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins shrugs off sack rumours

Nigel Adkins: Has been unable to edge Southampton away from trouble

Saints have been unable to pull themselves clear of relegation trouble over the festive period, with one win in eight meaning only goal difference is keeping them out of the drop zone.

Pressure is believed to be steadily mounting on Adkins' shoulders, with Southampton struggling to get to grips with life back in the Premier League.

A move for a more experienced coach has been touted, but Adkins insists he remains fully committed to the post - with no-one inside the club suggesting that his job is on the line.

"The speculation does not affect me at all," he said ahead of a crucial clash with fellow strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday.

"People always get linked, whether that be players or managers.

"I have to focus on being manager of Southampton Football Club. It's a position I am proud to have. In this league, we have young managers and experienced managers.

"Every manager is scrutinised and we all want to win. We are together as one here, and you have to keep striving to be successful."

Southampton playmaker Gaston Ramirez not on the radar of AC Milan

Gaston Ramirez: Reports of a switch to Milan have been played down

It has been suggested that the Uruguayan playmaker, who only joined Saints in the summer from Bologna, could be set for a return to Italian football.

However, Galliani says Milan are not considering a move for Ramirez as they are happy with the options currently available within the squad.

"Gaston Ramirez? We are OK in terms of player numbers and then we'll take someone only if someone leaves," he told Sky Italia.

One player set to join Milan in the summer is Riccardo Saponara, after a deal was agreed to bring in the midfielder from Empoli.

Galliani said: "I like Saponara and he fits in with the parameters with which we want to make AC Milan grow, because we are implementing a policy of young players."

Saponara told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "When I heard the news I started to cry for joy, I never thought I could achieve such a goal.

"I could not ask for more, it is a dream. Kaka has always been my idol."

Southampton defender Luke Shaw pledges long-term future to Premier League club

Luke Shaw: Defender has pledged his long-term future to Southampton

The 17-year-old made an impressive start to the season after being promoted to the first team squad last summer, making his first start in the second round of the Capital One Cup at Stevenage in August and his Premier League debut in November against Swansea City.

Shaw's introduction to the team coincided with Southampton moving away from the foot of the league table, as they put together an impressive string of results that has seen them beaten just twice in their last ten league games.

"I have spoken with the chairman about a long-term plan for me at the club," Shaw told the club's official website.

"To put an end to all the speculation, I will be committing my future to Southampton. I'm not going anywhere.

"I think Southampton is the place to be for young kids like me. I'm playing in the Premier League for the first team and that is all anyone wants to be doing, so I just want to carry on."

Shaw followed in the footsteps of fellow youngster James-Ward Prowse, who signed a five-year deal last November, and he praised the club's youth system.

"I have been at Southampton since a very young age so I've been here a long time now. I think they are happy with me here, and this club is great for young players like us," he said.

"If you look back over the years, Adam [Lallana] has come through the youth system and now he is the captain of the first team, and Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) has just signed a five-year deal - and that is what I want to be doing.

"We have a lot of trust in our youth and there are more players coming through next year, so hopefully we will just carry on going."

Looking ahead to the weekend's trip to Aston Villa, Shaw added:"This will probably be our biggest game of the season.

"We know that we can beat them so, if we go there and play our game, I'm sure we can get three points.

"We have a few games coming up that we can go and get po ints from and I believe we can do that.

"I think we will stay in the Premier League. We have been playing some superb football but the luck hasn't gone our way recently."
